This is the fault of other the candidates and their financial backers. In the US, opposing candidates hire investigators to vet other candidates' claims. For example, the US is still hearing about Obama's country of birth since 2007, almost 19 years now. It up to the other candidates to background check their opponents and disclose the finding. Waiting to after an election is far too late.
Lee Vandervis has done a little investigation of him and I am privy to some of the shenanigans around Ong's candidacy but to be fair finding information on Ong is quite difficult. And that suggests agency help.
This election was a bit odd, Andrew Whiley and Jim O'Malley being ejected is pretty unexpected. O'Malley being Barker's boyfriend (the Mayor elect) and Whiley being an unofficial National Party councilor. Both would seem to have had councilor roles for life based on previous elections (although definitely undeserved in O'Malley's case). No surprise re Houlahan and Acklin missing out, both were seriously useless.

They are not in complete control. And I doubt Benedict Ong is part of their show. But his election is very odd although it does maybe indicate a successful strategy for getting elected which does not require speeches at various 'town hall' meetings.
It's not his election that I am challenging but his right to stand.
I grasp that it is difficult to see the control the moneyed psychopaths have here on Our planet. But things that did not make sense to Me became crystal clear when I approached the "news" (that They own) as a scripted performance.
How do We know anything They tell Us is true?
And I suggest that the owners of the corp(se)orations can appoint anyOne They choose.
There is no solution in Their setup. We can only win when We move outside that psychopathic legal/governmafia mess.

I read Lee's article. Like you, he's on the right page. Ong is no different than any other politician.
You could consider running on the next round. Find sponsors willing to fund investigations into opponent's claims.

Isn't the "right to stand' have more to do with being able to afford to pay the "entry fee"
In Dunedin the right to vote is also anyone who turns up at the booth.
But both are supposed to be limited to Citizens. I doubt this guy was one when he stood though.
