Oh come on. What does the document say? It could be an original document but first it needs to be ascertained that it was written in NZ and not simply imported at a later date - presumably NZ place names are used to identify its origin, however, let's see them. Sounds bogus to me I have to say. Sure we know that so much of history is a lie and we know that Australian Aboriginals had contact with neighbouring peoples for a start, they weren't completely isolated before James Cook, but let's see what the document says first.
Indeed, history is mostly bunk. We would best get out from under the moneyed interests that sell Us bills of goods as "truth."
Interesting!
All they say is it's a lease but not of what:

Btw I'd be very surprised if whalers weren't in NZ before cook
Interesting. Is the sofa in which the document was found, vintage or antique?
If so, perhaps it was shipped to NZ by an early settler. Not in 1735, but later when
many Europeans and UK settlers arrived. It may have held memories of the ‘Old country’.
I remember my grandmother who was born in NZ called England ‘home’ as her mother did.
