I feel your pain. It probably does take over 10K subscribers. In the late 90's I was making over $800 a week with around 400 subscribers, but I was paid per view. I'm not charging for the VRR. After this war I'll probably go write somewhere else and never fucking mention covid, vaccine, Fauci or anything related or maybe just bag writing all together.
Hey Rich. Totally understand where you are coming from. As someone who is on a very limited income, I wish I could be a paid subscriber to everyone I read here on Substack. But it's impossible. What I do from time to time is buy a coffee or give a tip to an author. I know it's not a lot, but you might consider putting a tip jar or something on your posts. Thanks for all you do to keep us abreast of things going on in NZ.
I don't think that I can get an income from this blog any other way than getting to 20k + subscribers in total which also doesn't look like it's going to happen. But those who come by my blog (I have some N Z locals in mind who don't subscribe to my blog as far as I know) and randomly steal content without attribution should pay in my view.
For everyone else I'm just explaining why older posts are locked up. And I understand why we all can't pay all the blogs that we follow, I too am in that position of probably having to let some subs go.
Good luck. From what I see income is more or less going to Big and Bigger names or shall we add hobby blogs for cooking knitting and candy. There is a vast middle ground of folks who may generate revenue but as Ray Horvath observed minimum wage pays more. I am going to ask for contributions at some point, but not make any effort to restrict readership otherwise. My first thought best thought posts are likely not as tasty as the pizza slice I contend against. :)
Hard to know. You do have a lot going for you in NZ. Maybe a laser tight focus on Kiwi issues can grow income. Substack is new for me in how to grow revenue. I do not know how many folks in NZ are active nor what they are interested in reading. Also easily I can be incorrect about strictly NZ focus.
I am hoping today this issue is resolved. My bank simply insists the inability to connect to the payment processor is their error. Last 4 times I tried same response. Though yes I do need to put the link up the hassle factor is "tyresome" as the old English has it. So it goes. Today I intend to invest the time. Christmas is coming and gifting is good. :)
I was just explaining why old posts were locked down. I'm not trying to get everyone to pay as I think that real monetisation will only happen with a lot more subscribers.
I grok. I dunno. I see Yakkstack is doing well by focus on Canada and Covid. Obviously every blog has a different audience. However the rule of thumb seems to be compartmentalization, and building a large base interested in the laser focus. For example, cooking stacks seem to do well. Covid stacks seem dominated by big names. I wonder if building off your political run a tight focus on Kiwi issues could bring in 500 new readers.
I think the NZ focus is a good idea; but Substack is biggly American.
Less bad language is my tip.
Voices for Freedom were championing finding some correspondence from Swab to Cindy, and it was what you had gotten hold of earlier, but no one knows.
You are like a dog finding a bone; a real investigative terrier.
We know that a lot of people's views are not heard in this archipelago, so it would be good if your comments section got busier. Which means that you don't want to make people pay to comment so much as to pay to, as you imply, - surf your site.
Frank wasn't really a good thing that people would pay for. Where is he now I wonder? he's probably Malone or Steve haha.
Frances Leader says she is giving up. I know you had issues with her but I think she filled a gap in the reporting.
And Frances is still on my case. The issues I had with her is that I think that she is completely fake. Like Malone or Kirsch (I know that you think Steve is kind of ok but he came up with the idea of a vaccine pass all the way back in 2002).
My feeling is that many of today's 'billionaires' have been put there by the likes of the WEF. True I figure of the Google boys, Facebook, the FTX crypto guy (Bankman-Fried) and many others.
The optical mouse was supposedly invented by Steve and some Texan guy concurrently. But when I looked there was a Japanese guy who had tried to patent it, or something very similar, about 5 years before (77 or so). His patent never went through.
Hopefully you figured out the answers to the questions you posed?
The locking up feature is something that Substack offered recently. So I've made use of it. Much of the content of this blog has ended up elsewhere in the past but without attribution. So I'm making it harder for the NZ blogosphere to reuse the content here without attributing it to me as the source. It's happened quite a lot, the latest to it are Cam Slater and VFF.
If they want to ask me for it then I will freely give it but they will have to identity me as the source.
Like Queensland and NSW, New Zealand is trying to return us to masks. They're aiming at public transport first up and then I guess the plan is to incrementally roll it out from there.
My next post will be on excess deaths in NZ. But yes it's one of many interests rather than the driving force here.

Maybe I should split the blog, charge for other content but for the war stuff make it free. I don't know, still thinking on it.
Right on.

Pretty much right on the money there I'd guess.

A tip for you Stegiel would be to put the option out there instead of just thinking about it.
My bank app keeps screwing up.

Good marketing with the Christmas angle.
Everyone does Christmas? Maybe the Santa angle then.
New Year, Season of Goodwill to All.
Last year I didn't feel it was possible to wish anyone a Happy New Year, wonder what mood will grab me this time.

Gotta give readers an option to subscribe. You know freedom to choose. Coercion is also in fashion.
Maybe not hold them down and shoot them in the arm though; that's not nice.

Steve has some good ideas but also unfortunately some very suspect ones.
He's currently been putting up billboards outside health department offices stating that the clotshots are killing people.
That's a good idea, as the department staff have to look at the billboards. They can't plead ignorance.

Yes stolen by Cam Slater without attribution it would seem. And then by VFF I guess. I'm used to it.
Sounds like a good plan.
Well yes, people should have to pay to access the comments I made way back before I knew anything.
I agree with Cairn. Substack has been around for a while now and if we like the post
and like to comment it is a privilege to pay towards the work that has gone into it.
Nothing in life comes for free, eventually we have to account for every single thing.
Hopefully you figured out the answers to the questions you posed?

Thanks that is clearer. I deleted because I take a while to grasp some things.
My headspace is different to a lot of other people ie wired differently.
In the next week I am cancelling 50% of my substacks to get away from Covid repetition. Not yours - because you don't go on about it.
Cam Slater is going through some heavy Karma - depression and a stroke.
Perhaps an example of how we have to pay for being nasty.
