No doubt a lot of rate payer funds have been spent on gravy trains for consultants on this.

There's no point in having no car zones unless there's a decent reliable bus service with decent bus stop shelters. Biking doesn't suit everyone, and leads to poor dress standards.

Hey. I've been cycling to the events here in town in jacket and tie thanks very much. And although I agree that biking is not for everyone it is for a lot of those Greens turning up at these events in their cars.

Realistically with the price of petrol heading skywards and threats of governments even locking down private cars cycling needs to be in the mix with trams, buses so as we can maintain our independence.

But if that was snarc against lycra I'm in full support of it.

At a Meet the Candidates forum last Thursday a candidate said that a developer had his townhouse development turned down because it included garages.

The three incumbent councillors did not correct the comment, and someone else quoted another example, so I guess that it's true.

It's a Green Party policy pushed by Julie Anne Genter which I think is a part of the Government's reforms. Not evident here where a new development knocked down a 100yo brick building which could have been a great community centre to build carparks for their new rather horrible townhouse development.

I kind of like Julie Anne but wish that she would dump the "Trans women are women" club song.

Sad about the brick building.

The Wreckers are in charge.

It was also undisputed that a car park building, on James Smith corner, which had Kaikoura earthquake issues, and which the owner wanted to fix up, is unlikely to ever see the light as the WCC want $50 per park per week as a congestion tax.

Mention was also made of the significant revenue to the WCC which will be lost, from metered car parking.

The outgoing councillors just spent big bucks on consultants justifying speed limits of 30kph. When bikes go faster.

The very pro this councilor said it was for children's safety. Yeah right.

But I did think that the policy was a voluntary one. Nevertheless we need to reduce car ownership in our cities if public and active transport is going to work.

Also I understand that one of the potential policies of this government is to ban you from using a petrol driven car under some 'emergency' scenarios. Cars are easier to lock down than bikes or even trams.

Electricity is easier, for the powers that should not be, to pull the plug on.

Having one's own petrol powered car represents freedom.

And the powers that should not be see freedom as a BIG threat to their control.

They would rather freak everyone out on safety and to demonize freedom.

Maybe local based electricity grids rather than one big national one that is not great at letting people contribute to it (give) and take from it (pay).

I think gondolas could work as transport in Wellington btw. They are already operational in Lima I believe.

Good tourist attraction too.

I don't think that we are allowed to be attractive anymore.
