Our regional ferry system is in collapse. Too little ridership. Cost of operations subsidized and too high given ridership. With bridge tolls and petrol rising in cost we may see more riders. On the other hand the car represents mobility and NOW. And given haste most people are unable to do without the car.

I wonder how Sydney ferries are doing in this post covid world.

I took the ferry from San Fran to Sausalito many years ago but don't know it other than that.

We have several ferries and none really have ridership. Sausalito is a ghost town now. Marin country has several ferries. Alameda also. And a ferry to Solano county. Commuters no longer commute and tourists do not use the service frequently.

I know this very well. As we live about 1500 metres from my wife's work place and she has an electric bike. But she drives there 95% of time due to convenience and safety as there's no bike lanes.

You know I am so urban I instantly think of a ride share or taxi. Probably the hassle of bringing the bike in is cost effective. Or you reside in a place where such transit is more costly than worth.

Also when she gets there (big box retailer) there is nowhere really to leave her somewhat expensive bike. It is likely to get stolen if she leaves it outside and there is nowhere purpose made for leaving it inside.
