I love your work Rich. I wish I could pay for every sub that I follow here, but unfortunately, I just can't at this time. As for my little Substack... I totally went into it as a hobby and a way to stay sane. I think the value we get as a community right now is probably more lucrative than any kind of money we might make. Regardless of whether you post once a day or once a week, I will continue to look forward to your updates.

Thanks. I've just cancelled all my subscriptions myself and will move to gifting myself 5 or so a month.

Same here. I think I might have tried to set mine at 80 cents or something but Substack imposes a 5 NZD minimum (if I remember correctly, something like that anyway)

I've just looked that one up and made it part of another post. NZ must surely be about to back out of this one. Which makes this more interesting

The guys involved in that are very nearby. In fact I know one of them and used to live next door to him for a few months back about 9 years ago.

The fundamental idea behind tech, from gugle down, is to build a critical mass of users and supporters first. Then try to find ways to make money from it - not the reverse. This is the opposite of the "real" world.

Do you think big tech would have thrived if they started charging from the beginning or early on?

Look at Berenson. He had to work hard to build credibility and a profile, then got on Fox, Rogue Rogan and others before he started to make money from Sub. And he has that critical first-mover advantage. Provided he continues to maintain his credibility. he's got it made.

Why do you think businesses advertise? Why do you think any publicity is good publicity? PUBLIC AWARENESS!

The Substacks are certainly more than just the authors; the quality of the comments enhances the whole product. So an author can't expect many paid subscribers early on. There's a sweet spot, because large numbers of subscribers also indicates that each one is not significant.

I like the "Buy me a coffee" option. The clotshots have given the never ending subscription model a bad name.

Big tech is integrated with big Spy. None of the current wonder boys would be anywhere if the American military had not subsidized them.

True. But there is no law forcing people to use them. And some beg to rejoin.

Are the military and spooks giving them all that ad revenue?

“Provided he continues to maintain his credibility”—too late on that front. He lost thousands of paid subscribers after the sideswiping stunt he pulled against Malone on Fox while also propounding BigPharma talking points about ivermectin, and then he only responded to the Daily Beast while ignoring the thousands of requests from his subscribers to respond to their concerns.

That said, he still has a loyal following and likely has it made regardless, but he has damaged his credibility beyond repair in my eyes.

Really, Margaret, Berenson lost thousands of paid subscribers?

I agree with you. As I said, I read Berenson only for non-med rowuhan matters, What I found odd is that he claimed not to be aware of "evidence" on ivermectin and HCW, yet he quoted single studies for his posts.

How was it possible for him to believe "data" based one or two studies, yet ignored 50+ and countries which give them out? Not possible!

Have you stopped paying him?

As the Prime Minister of Australia, effectively, said "It is your body; it is your responsibility; it is your choice." (Yet he supported v compulsions for many workers.)

Expand full comment

Yes, I think he did lose thousands. If you read the comments in these threads (not that you have time as there are zillions), you’ll see *many* people saying they had either already canceled their subscriptions or were going to if he didn’t apologize to Malone and retract his disinformation about ivermectin:

I had actually canceled my subscription before the kerfuffle and had only paid $6 total (I only paid that to begin with because I had written out a comment I really wanted to post and found it was for paid subscribers only ;-)

I think I've done that once or twice as well. But I'm now at my limit. Might do what Cairn Terrier suggested and give myself gift one month subscriptions of 5/6 each month but change them each month as well.

We are broke but not broken. Kintsugi is the Japanese art of putting broken pottery pieces back together with gold — built on the idea that in embracing flaws and imperfections, you can create an even stronger, more beautiful piece of art. Every break is unique and instead of repairing an item like new, the 400-year-old technique actually highlights the "scars" as a part of the design. Using this as a metaphor for healing ourselves teaches us an important lesson: Sometimes in the process of repairing things that have broken, we actually create something more unique, beautiful and resilient.

i think substack have it wrong at the moment, but maybe for a reason.

once substack builds into a bigger platform they might want to look at a general subscription that allows us readers the chance to join at a reasonable rate to read a few authors, like tv packages

Medium does that. I pay 50 bucks for a year and follow several people. I hope Substack will do that too, because now I have 3 paid subscriptions at 60 bucks each, and that is in fact already a max, since I am on a very low income. I wish I could subscribe to all, but that is just impossible. I hope to read more of you Rich, that you continue to stay in touch. Wishing you well !

Ingrid, have you ever tried unsubscribing from a paid subscription?

I ask this as I have found with MSM subscriptions to stop the money coming out of my credit card is a real puzzle.

A couple of times I have had to wait till the credit card expires date-wise.

Hate to admit it (so shamefully embarrassing, but it was a few years ago), that I once upon a time subscribed to the New York Times. Had to have a "chat" with a Siri type, unsuccessfully, then wait for credit card to expire.

Just now done the same with the Daily Telegraph.

The easier thing is PayPal where you block them yourself. Call your card company they can block them for you. They can even get your money back if the subscription automatically renewed

You can always cancel the credit card. That works mostly.

Equally so, the Cult should not have been in such a hurry. They failed at Marketing 101, should have made us pay for the clot shots, then done a 2 for 1 deal, and Black Friday specials, and buy one for the underprivileged. Etc.

Yes, I totally hear you. I certainly can't make a living off of my Substack. The whole business model here favors people with big audiences and in order to build up to that, it takes time and sometimes luck...not to mention, people only have so many $5/month subscriptions they are willing or able to pay for.

I tried to set my introductory subscription rate to something more doable like $2/month and Substack won't let me (never mind the fees issue). But that also means you need a thousand subscribers to make it worth it. Now, I certainly have other things (classes and services) I can market to my list (which I haven't really done yet), so I could see it making financial sense in that respect, but not everyone does.

But ultimately, I find myself right now *needing* to write things to get it off my chest despite also needing to *not* write so much because of my time.
